This is a photo album page showing views of Den Haag. The cool gray tone of the album page sets off these small black and white photographs in a really striking way. It’s interesting to consider the care and planning involved in laying out the images with these handwritten captions, each placed just so. I am drawn to the looping script in the caption, "koninklijk paleis" - it feels playful, like a doodle, yet it also grounds each image, identifying the location. Thinking about this page, I’m reminded of some of the work of John Baldessari, who also combined images and text in ways that invite you to slow down and really look. Ultimately, this album page makes me think about how we assemble memories, both visual and textual, to construct a narrative. It highlights that sense of openness and multiple readings that is what I love about art.
