Jason Limon made "Hang On, Dear Life" sometime in the 21st century, using paint. It's got this almost aged feel, like it's been hanging in a dusty old shop for decades. The texture is really something here. The way Limon layers the paint, you can almost feel the grit and roughness of the skeleton against the smoothness of the painted sign, and the paper is raised from the flat background. Look at the way the light catches on the edges of the bones, those fine lines, almost disappearing into the background. The dark muted palette, punctuated by the burgundy and cream banner, pulls you in closer. It's got this eerie romantic quality. You see a similar use of texture and depth in the work of someone like Remedios Varo, that sense of a world both strange and familiar. It's a nice reminder that art is always in conversation.
