This pre-digital message to Philip Zilcken, probably made with ink and paper, shows us how people connected way back when. I imagine Storm van 's-Gravesande carefully writing out the address, maybe even thinking about the person who would receive it. The stamp and seals, they’re like little graphic gestures, each one deliberately placed, adding texture and depth to the card's surface. The handwriting is a kind of drawing. It reminds me that marks, like gestures, communicate feeling and intention. Thinking about the act of sending a message, it strikes me as an intimate exchange. It's an exchange across time, echoing a kind of conversation or dialogue. Each element plays a part in the story, leaving traces of human presence and connection.
