Anton Heyboer created ‘Life Is All’ using simple materials: paper, charcoal, and pigment. The apparent ease of its making belies the complexity of the artist’s vision. Look closely, and you can see how Heyboer has exploited the inherent qualities of his media. Charcoal, smudged and layered, gives a spectral depth to the figures, while small touches of orange pigment offer punctuation. The marks feel spontaneous, almost automatic, but also deliberate in their arrangement. Heyboer’s practice was rooted in intuition and spirituality. He claimed to receive messages from another realm, which he then translated into his art. The sheer quantity of his output speaks to an almost compulsive need to create. His methods bypass conventional labor; it’s more like a form of channeling, flowing directly from mind to hand. This work challenges our understanding of the distinction between high art and craft, showing the expressive power of simple materials when wielded with singular vision.
