Here is Henri Wouters’ etching of Lucas Hermanus Eberson, held at the Rijksmuseum. Note the subject’s composed expression and formal attire, a white bow tie over a dark suit. These symbols tell of a man of status, well-kept and likely of considerable means. Such portraits connect to those of Roman senators and Renaissance merchants. The intent is similar—to convey dignity and importance. The bow tie, a later iteration of earlier neckwear, represents a transformation of sartorial symbols of power. Initially, neckwear functioned as a mark of the elite class. Over time, though, it has become a symbol of conformity and acceptance. Here, the portrait is more than a record; it is a carefully constructed image meant to project a certain persona. The image resonates with the human desire for recognition and legacy, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. The symbols are a blend of status and tradition, showing an individual and his place in the cyclical progression of history.
