Pieter (I) Scheemaeckers created this "Ontwerp voor een grafmonument met Justitia, Fama en Abundantia" using pen and brown ink, brush and gray wash. At first glance, the drawing presents a pyramidal structure, stabilized on a rectangular base. Notice how the monument is a carefully arranged composition of allegorical figures and symbolic elements. The artist uses line and wash to create depth, lending a sculptural quality to the otherwise flat surface. The work seems to challenge the traditional expectations of funereal art. The idealized figures of Justitia, Fama and Abundantia are placed asymmetrically, creating a dynamic tension. This tension is reinforced through the semiotic play of signs that represent virtues and achievements, engaging with Baroque sensibilities but questioning its conventions. It reminds us that art doesn't have fixed meanings, but opens up interpretations about cultural values of the time. The formal elements of the drawing invites us to reconsider how we attribute meaning to form and symbol.
