This undated photo album page, titled 'Groep militairen tijdens hun werk en tijdens hun vrije tijd' or 'Group of soldiers during their work and their free time' presents us with a kind of parallel vision. I imagine the photographer turning the album page, considering the placement of each square, each image a small window into the lives of these soldiers. Maybe they were trying to show us that even within the strictures of military life, moments of camaraderie and leisure exist. There are some very human groupings, soldiers standing together and some playing musical instruments. This feels tender, intimate, and poignant. It is an image that speaks to the complexities of human experience, the blending of duty and pleasure, and the quiet moments that sustain us, even in the most challenging circumstances. This resonates with my own practice, which seeks to find the tender and the funny, the hard and the soft, all on one surface.
