Vajda Lajos made this etching, 'Vajda Lajos Pincekapu Homokfutóval' or 'Lajos Vajda Cellar Door with Sand Runner' sometime in 1936. Look at the grayness, the grittiness, and the line. What a dreamy, haunted feeling! I bet Lajos was wandering around somewhere, feeling a little lost, maybe a little bit lonely. He saw the door and maybe he thought about what was behind it, or he felt like the door was a face, and he just wanted to draw it. And then he added this little sand runner contraption, floating on top of the door, like a thought bubble. You know, that's what painters do. We see something, we feel something, and we just want to put it down, try it out, and see what happens. Lajos probably didn't know exactly what he was doing, but he did it anyway. And that's why it's so good. It's like he's saying, "Hey, I'm here, I'm thinking, I'm feeling, and I'm not sure what it all means, but here it is." And that's enough.
