Vajda Lajos made this print titled "Vajda Lajos Pincekapu Homokfutóval" in 1936, I imagine using a needle and acid on a copper plate. Look at the figure in the top left of the print, it's so awkward, a sand runner maybe. The forms look so clumsy and fragile, like a memory that's fading. But those lines really cut into the surface, the mark making looks so definite. There is an interesting contrast between the clear lines of the architectural features, and the spontaneous lines of the figure. There is a real sense of depth, the way the ink sits on the paper makes you wonder about the pressure of the press, and the bite of the acid. You could compare it to the work of Béla Kondor, another Hungarian artist who explored surreal themes. Ultimately, this piece embraces both clarity and ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations, rather than settling on one fixed meaning.
