Editor: This artwork, "Skitser af køer," or "Sketches of Cows," was made between 1900 and 1905 by Niels Larsen Stevns and is currently at the SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark. It seems to be a series of watercolor and pencil studies in a sketchbook. It’s interesting how he captures these cows in different positions, like a little glimpse into a farmer’s field. What do you see when you look at it? Curator: Well, viewing it through a historical lens, I find myself considering the rising interest in rural life at the turn of the century. There's a pull away from industrialization and toward simpler existences, a theme that resonated with many artists and audiences then. Editor: That's a good point. How does this sketch fit within that context? Curator: The artist isn't just depicting cows; he's subtly engaging with a wider cultural narrative. Stevns uses accessible mediums like watercolor and pencil to create approachable images. By presenting farm animals so directly, he challenges the traditional hierarchy of art, which had often prioritized history or mythology. Think about the societal pressures of the time – the rise of agrarianism, folk movements. Are these depictions simple or symbolic? Editor: So, in a way, his choice of subject and medium becomes a commentary on the artistic institutions of the period? It is a way of highlighting ordinary subjects? Curator: Precisely! And the display of the work is key, it highlights the democratisation of the art world during the time. Editor: That’s given me a new way to view this. Seeing how it links to societal changes and questions traditional art themes makes me appreciate it more. Curator: And for me, reflecting on our dialogue, I realize the importance of looking at the institutional settings where such works found a home and gained public acceptance.
