Malte Sonnenfeld confronts us with an acrylic tableau of a man, a filling station, and Swiss Army gum, all floating in a dreamlike setting. The filling station—a space of transit and replenishment—stands sentinel. But observe closely: this station dispenses not just fuel, but expectation, a potent, almost desperate hope, like Vladimir and Estragon from Beckett's Waiting for Godot. The floating gum, a modern, secular emblem of preparedness and assurance, echoes the ancient symbol of the cornucopia, a horn overflowing with sustenance. Consider the man's gaze, intense and unwavering. He embodies the modern condition—the angst of waiting, the search for meaning in a world of transient encounters. The gum’s promise of reliability contrasts sharply with the void, a silent film of human longing and unfulfilled thirst, for tea, for meaning, for connection. The motif circles back: the filling station in the background, and our man in the foreground both waiting for something.
