Curatorial notes

This is a reproduction by Gustav Schauer of Max Nonnenbruch’s 1901 painting 'Pictura'. The muted tones give the piece a hazy, dreamlike quality. It's like looking at a memory, faded but still present. I find myself drawn to the way the figure emerges from the background, her dress almost blending with the surrounding foliage. It’s as if she’s a part of the landscape itself, not separate from it. The texture of the print, it's not smooth, but full of tiny bumps and ridges, gives the image a tactile quality that draws you in closer. I love the way the artist’s gaze meets ours, inviting us to consider the act of creation. It reminds me of a similar figure in Courbet's 'The Painter's Studio,' a nod to the ongoing conversation between artists across time. Like any good work, this piece leaves you with questions, not answers, inviting you to bring your own experiences to the viewing.
