Delizy made this small photograph, ‘Vier personen in een automobiel te Quimper, op de achtergrond de kathedraal Saint-Corentin’ or ‘Four People in a Car in Quimper, with the Saint-Corentin Cathedral in the Background’ and I’m imagining the scene coming together through the lens. It’s so interesting, this proto-snapshot of a car filled with dudes in hats. I’m thinking about how this photograph must have been made, and all the planning involved. The light is beautiful, and it makes me want to consider the ways it falls on the building, creating an ambiance that the artist wanted to capture. There's a tower in the distance, and everything appears to be converging at that focal point. I wonder if it was intentional? There’s a great image by Atget that I admire that also shows the way a city holds its history, like this photograph. It’s all one big conversation, and that’s what painting and photography is too, just a huge conversation.
