Editor: This print from 1779, titled "Two Classical Vases and an Ewer" by Patrick Begbie, features, as the title suggests, a trio of vessels. What strikes me first is how rigidly symmetrical and detailed each of these forms are. How do you interpret this work from a formalist point of view? Curator: It is an interesting display of neoclassical design, particularly noticeable in the emphasis on clean lines and geometric precision. Note the stark contrast in surface treatment, though – the central vase presents flat planes versus the highly decorated forms of the ewer and goblet on either side. Begbie exploits engraving to achieve this visual effect. The pattern, repetition, and proportion seem central. How does the formal balance speak to you? Editor: I see that—especially the fluting in the central vase juxtaposed with the more textured surfaces of the others. Do you see a particular system driving the layout? Curator: Yes, observe how Begbie uses a strict vertical axis in each design and in the overall arrangement to enforce balance. The eye moves from the base to the finial. Each vase also contains discrete ornamental registers and detailed insets with classical motifs. In considering the overall visual, what elements appear most critical to you in creating an effective composition? Editor: I think that symmetry is really key, as it really highlights each of the object's individual form and details, allowing for greater appreciation. Also the tonal scale in color usage really flattens and highlights the volume. Curator: Indeed. The overall arrangement promotes the Neoclassical aesthetic through its careful, intellectual deployment of line, form, and the visual language of symmetry. A very considered print!
