Zani Corrado made this 48 by 36 cm painting with no title, and it’s all about the marks, right? Squiggles and swipes of dark green, black, and ghostly white create a mysterious landscape. I’m really drawn to how Corrado lets the pastel do its thing. The strokes are raw, kind of like how a kid might attack a coloring book, but with this amazing control. There’s this real sense of touch and physicality. Look closely, and you can almost feel the grit of the pastel on the paper. The way he layers the colors, especially that stark white against the deep greens, gives the painting a moody, almost gothic feel. I can't help but think of Anselm Kiefer, but with more chill. Both artists share this love for texture and raw emotion, but Corrado keeps it loose, embracing the messy, uncertain side of art making. It’s a reminder that paintings don't need to spell everything out to be powerful, they just need to invite us in.
