Twee puntdichten bij de spotprent met het wegkruien van de hertog van Brunswijk uit Nederland, 1784 1784
Dimensions height 203 mm, width 165 mm
This satirical print, made in 1784 by an anonymous artist, uses the relatively new technology of print to circulate political commentary. The work is made using the intaglio printmaking method: the design is etched into a metal plate, and the recessed lines hold ink. This is then pressed onto paper, transferring the image. You can imagine the labor involved - designing the composition, carefully etching the plate, inking, and printing. This particular print, with its pointed verses, critiques the Duke of Brunswick, who was seen as a negative influence on Dutch politics. The text is the image. The relatively low cost of printmaking compared to painting allowed for wider distribution of such political commentary. This was essential in shaping public opinion and fostering political discourse at a time of growing social and political upheaval. It highlights how materials and processes can be powerful tools for social change.
