M. Prudhomme: "You see, oh! my son...there's another innocent victim struck by the murderour bullet! poor duck..." 1858
Curator: This is Honoré Daumier's lithograph portraying M. Prudhomme lamenting the death of a duck. It's interesting how Daumier uses satire to critique societal values. Editor: It's a bit comical, don't you think? But what’s Daumier trying to say about class and maybe even human nature here? Curator: I think Daumier highlights the hypocrisy of the bourgeois. M. Prudhomme mourns the duck, but is blind to the systemic violence inherent in their privileged lifestyle. What do you make of the son's response? Editor: It seems he'd rather be the duck than the hunter! This piece certainly gives a lot to think about. Curator: Exactly! Art as social commentary, pushing us to examine power dynamics and challenge the status quo.
