"A Short History of General F. Sigel" is a colorful lithograph from 1888, part of the "Histories of Generals" series produced by W. Duke, Sons & Co. to promote their "Honest Long Cut" tobacco brand. The card features a portrait of the Union general Franz Sigel in his military uniform, along with an illustration of a soldier holding a flag, and two images of stylized foliage with berries. This type of card, known as a trade card, was a popular form of advertising in the late 19th century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses this piece, which demonstrates the visual culture of American tobacco advertising during the Gilded Age.
