"A Fountain at Grottaferrata" was drawn by Josephus Augustus Knip. While the exact date is not known, Knip was active during a time of significant social change, where the old aristocratic order was in decline. This landscape drawing, in delicate pencil and watercolor, presents a scene that invites contemplation on the relationship between nature and culture. Knip's choice to depict a humble, utilitarian structure like a fountain, within a lush natural setting, reflects a shift in artistic focus. Rather than glorifying grand historical or mythological events, Knip focuses on the everyday and the local. The fountain becomes a point of intersection - a place where human needs and the natural world meet. The presence of the fountain also evokes themes of access and community - it invites us to consider who had access to this resource, and how it shaped their daily lives. While the artwork is quiet in its presentation, it speaks volumes about the changing social landscape of its time, marking a shift towards valuing the lives and experiences of ordinary people within their environment.

Grottaferrata is located southeast of Rome, on the northern side of Lake Albano. Knip worked up only a small section of his crisply, carefully detailed graphite sketch with grey wash and a touch of watercolour. It is precisely this ‘unfinished’ character that often lends his drawings their exceptional appeal.
