Lucas Cranach the Elder created this oil on wood painting, titled *The Old Man in Love*, in Austria at an unknown date. Cranach here tackles the themes of age, beauty, and perhaps the social dynamics of desire. Produced in the 16th century, the image creates meaning through its depiction of an elderly man embracing a much younger woman. Back then, marriage was very often a financial transaction. Through the juxtaposition of youth and old age, the image evokes anxieties about social mobility and wealth distribution, while also questioning the accepted norms of love and marriage in Reformation-era Europe. Further research into the political and social context of Cranach’s Germany, as well as the history of marriage and gender relations, might offer additional insight into this provocative work. The role of historians, after all, is to understand art as something contingent on social and institutional context.
