Andy Warhol created Quadrant Mickey Mouse with silkscreen ink on canvas, but I imagine him almost playing, like a kid! The vivid blocks of color – pinks, yellows, blues – feel so bold and graphic, each square like a pop-art playground for Mickey. Repetition, right? But each Mickey is still so alive, so different. There is something so iconic about the simple lines and bright colors. I wonder what Warhol was thinking when he decided to repeat Mickey like this. You can see other artists doing something similar, like, think about how Jasper Johns used the American flag. There's an ongoing conversation happening between artists, each building on what came before, creating something new. To me, painting isn't about being "right" or finding one single meaning. It's about embracing the messiness, the questions, and the endless possibilities of what can be.
