Jean Degottex made this work, Suite La Rose, with a dynamic interplay of brushstrokes and colour. I can imagine the artist standing before the canvas, brush in hand, making intuitive marks, maybe in a state of focused meditation. There's a soft pink that blooms on the white surface like a hazy memory or a fleeting dream, and set against it are strong calligraphic gestures. A dance between intention and chance, the thick brushstrokes carry a raw energy, full of emotion. Degottex sought to capture something essential, maybe even ineffable. His works are full of Eastern influences and share a common aesthetic with Cy Twombly. It is a conversation across time, with artists responding to each other, influencing and inspiring. This piece reminds us that painting can be a form of embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and allowing for multiple interpretations.
