This abstract piece by Vilen Barsky uses ink and watercolour to create a startling composition. It's all about the fluidity of the medium, how the ink bleeds and spreads, almost fighting against the control of the artist. Look at the upper part, with the black ink seeming to grow like some strange botanical form. The contrast between the sharp lines and the soft, blurred edges gives it a real energy. Then your eye drops to the red watercolour, so visceral and raw, like an open wound. For me, there's something really compelling about the tension between the abstract forms and the sense of organic growth. It reminds me a little bit of some of the surrealist art made by Joan Miró, where biomorphic forms mix with pure abstraction. Ultimately, the beauty of a work like this is that it resists easy interpretation, offering a space for our own projections and feelings.
