Alfred Stieglitz made this gelatin silver print, "Equivalent", and honestly, it looks like something I might paint from memory. The beauty of this photograph is that it captures a feeling, the same as when I'm working with paint, it’s a process of chasing something elusive. The dark areas in the print aren’t just dark; they feel heavy, substantial, like a mood. Then the light streaks across the frame, creating a visual rhythm, a kind of emotional tempo that pulls you in. The upper right, has what seems to be trees. I'm reminded of Gerhard Richter's cloud paintings, where he blurred photography and painting together. Like Richter, Stieglitz isn’t just showing us clouds; he’s making visible an internal state, something deeply felt. And isn't that what art is all about? Not a fixed meaning, but a door to our own interpretations.
