Huib van Hove created this print, "Man in historisch kostuum," in the 19th century. Our eyes are drawn to the flag with its coat of arms, an emblem steeped in ancestral memory. The coat of arms – a symbolic representation of family lineage – has been with us since medieval knights distinguished themselves on the battlefield. These emblems became vessels of identity, encapsulating generations of history within a single image. But let us trace this motif further. We can see echoes of this need for symbolic representation in ancient cultures: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Roman standards... Mankind has an insatiable need to visually materialize identity and legacy. It appears and reappears, shifting with cultures, taking on new forms, yet always serving the fundamental human desire to leave one's mark on the vast canvas of time. The powerful emotion that the coat of arms evokes engages viewers on a subconscious level, evoking a sense of collective memory and cultural identity.
