Yi Zhai rendered this delicate painting of birds, insects and flowers in watercolour, capturing a fleeting moment in nature. At its heart, we see a bird perched on a branch laden with cherries, with insects hovering nearby, all symbols rich with meaning. Consider the image of the bird. Across cultures, birds have long been seen as messengers, mediators between the earthly and the divine, emblems of freedom and the soul. This motif appears through time, from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs depicting the soul as a bird to Renaissance paintings where birds symbolize spiritual aspiration. Here, in this Chinese painting, the bird may evoke a sense of harmony between man and nature, a concept deeply embedded in the cultural memory of the East. The cherries, too, with their vibrant red, represent vitality, good fortune, and the transient beauty of life. These symbols engage viewers on a subconscious level and serve as a reminder of our connection to the natural world. Such symbols show us the cyclical progression of nature.
