"Roses VI" was made by Małgorzata Serwatka with oil paints, using traditional techniques, to capture the beauty and texture of roses. The vibrant colors and thick application of paint gives the roses a tactile, almost three-dimensional quality. You can imagine Serwatka layering the oil paints to build up the texture, blending shades of crimson and scarlet to convey the velvety feel of the petals. The surrounding leaves and stems are articulated with painterly strokes, capturing the organic forms of the natural world. This artwork is tied to wider social issues of labor, politics, and consumption, and the amount of work involved in the production process. Ultimately, understanding the materials and processes involved, along with the cultural context, enriches our appreciation of "Roses VI," challenging conventional boundaries between fine art and craft.
