Caroline Reboux made this hat with woolen jersey and feathers; it's a tactile wonder. I can imagine Reboux, her fingers dancing with the tiny barbs of each feather, carefully placing them to create a symphony of texture and color. The black wool provides a grounding contrast, allowing the reds and browns of the feathers to truly sing. There's an undeniable sensuality in the layers, an invitation to touch and feel the interplay of soft wool and delicate feathers. The feathers feel carefully placed, with a beautiful gradient of hues suggesting the warmth of sunlight and the coolness of shadows. It makes me think of a bird taking flight or maybe a painter applying strokes to canvas, each gesture imbued with intention and emotion. And maybe Reboux felt like she was conversing with milliners across time, all striving to create something beautiful and expressive. It’s all about the conversation that painting allows us to have. An invitation to dream and wonder, to find beauty in the unexpected, and to embrace the ambiguities that make art so compelling.
