This is an untitled work on paper, by Franz Kline. Look at those big, bold strokes! It’s all about the energy of the gesture, the pure physicality of moving ink across the page. You can almost feel the artist’s arm swinging, the brush dancing. The ink is laid down pretty thick in some spots, almost like it's been dragged. And notice how the white of the paper isn’t just background; it’s part of the composition, creating these dynamic contrasts with the black. There's this one mark at the top, a thin vertical line, like a mast. It almost feels like he was pushing against gravity, defying the weight of the ink below. Kline reminds me a bit of de Kooning, both so expressive, so committed to the moment of painting. But Kline takes it a step further, stripping everything down to the essential push and pull of form. It’s like he’s saying, "Let's see how much feeling we can pack into just a few marks." It's really something to behold.
