This untitled work was made by Karl Otto Gotz, and looks to be a study in black ink, maybe India ink. It's fascinating how Gotz uses just two tones to create such a dynamic composition, the white almost fighting for space against the bold black strokes. I love the physical quality of the marks – you can almost feel the speed of the artist’s hand, the way the ink splatters and bleeds into the paper. Notice the area on the right, where the white space is punctuated by those little dots? They create this sense of depth and texture, making the image feel almost three-dimensional. It’s like Gotz is playing with the push and pull of form and void, figure and ground. There’s something almost calligraphic about this piece, reminding me of Franz Kline's gestural abstractions. Both artists embrace the beauty of imperfection, finding poetry in the raw energy of the mark. It's a good reminder that art doesn't always have to be pretty, it just has to be true.
