This vase was made by Terez Mattyasovsky and it lives at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I'm getting a painterly buzz from this object. I'm picturing Mattyasovsky at her potter's wheel, patiently building up the form, layer by layer, probably over several sessions. The trees are really standing out to me; they look like they have been lifted directly from a painting. Maybe they remind me of Arthur Dove's tree paintings? I'm trying to imagine the artist making this piece. I wonder if she saw the vessel as a kind of canvas? The vase has a strange, dreamlike quality with its sunset palette and delicate turtle frieze. It reminds me that artists are constantly in dialogue, each inspiring and building upon the work of those who came before. It feels so personal, with the imperfections of the hand still visible.
