This "Salt" cellar was crafted by the New England Glass Company sometime between 1818 and 1888. Made from pressed glass, its milky white opacity invites a closer look at its form and details. The rectangular structure is punctuated by classical motifs: a basket of fruit adorns its side panels, framed by rope-like borders. Above, the scalloped edge lends a delicate touch to the otherwise rigid geometry. Notice the interplay of textures—smooth surfaces contrasted with intricate embossed patterns that create depth and visual interest. The choice of opaque glass removes any sense of transparency, and with it, a more traditional classical style which valued clarity. The basket of fruit motif— a recurring element in decorative arts— is made here slightly absurd by being repeated exactly on each side of the container. The design perhaps challenges our expectations of luxury and craftsmanship.
