This Klagetoh type rug was woven by a Navajo (Diné) artist, though we don’t know exactly when. Imagine the artist at their loom, interweaving each thread with intention and care, building the composition one pass at a time, like a painter building up layers of color and form. The rug features geometric patterns in grey, white, red, and brown, creating a balanced and harmonious design. I think it would have been deeply satisfying to make! Each shape and line must be so carefully planned, yet also intuitive, guided by the artist’s vision and skill. The artist’s choice of colors creates a sense of depth and warmth. The grey background provides a grounding for the brighter colors to pop. Each motif is carefully placed, like individual brushstrokes. The rug’s design speaks to tradition, yet also expresses the artist’s unique perspective and creativity. Weavers, like painters, are always in conversation with one another.
