Pieter de Bailliu created this engraving, *Saint Dominic with Rosary and Imperial Apple and Dog with Burning Torch*, in the seventeenth century. Dominic was a Spanish priest and founder of the Dominican Order, known for its intellectual tradition and its role in the Inquisition. Here, Dominic is beatific, a halo floating behind his head. He holds a book, a symbol of his scholarly pursuits. Note, too, the rosary handed down by a divine hand, as well as the globe and dog with a torch at his feet. The dog is a visual pun; the Dominicans were known as the "Domini canes," or "dogs of the Lord," and their mission was to seek out and destroy heresy. Consider how this image served to perpetuate the power and prestige of the Dominican Order. What does it mean to portray a religious figure as both a beacon of knowledge and a symbol of dogmatic enforcement? The emotional weight of the engraving lies in the duality of Dominic’s image, poised between spirituality and worldly power.
