Antonio Tempesta created this engraving, "The Holy Simon," sometime between 1570 and 1630. The piece reflects the cultural milieu of Counter-Reformation Europe, where religious art was employed to reinforce Catholic doctrine. Here, Saint Simon is depicted with a saw, an emblem of his martyrdom, while in the background, his execution unfolds. His serene expression juxtaposes the violence around him, inviting contemplation on faith, suffering, and salvation. The book he holds signifies knowledge and divine wisdom. Tempesta, an Italian artist active in Rome, was known for his dynamic and detailed prints. This work, now held in the Rijksmuseum, demonstrates his ability to blend religious narrative with dramatic visual storytelling, reflecting the era’s complex relationship between religious conviction and the realities of violence and persecution.
