This work by Tadanori Yokoo is a visual feast made with a screen-printing technique. The layering of colours, the juxtaposition of different elements, it’s all about the process here, about building up images one on top of the other. Look at how Yokoo uses colour - bold, saturated, and not afraid to clash. There's a real flatness to it, which gives it a graphic feel. It’s like he’s creating a collage of different realities. And the textures! Some areas are smooth, while others have this gritty, almost handmade quality. Take the central statue, for instance, it's rendered in this mossy green-brown, and set against a bright red sun. It's a collision of classical form with psychedelic sensibility. Yokoo invites us to see art as something ever-evolving, where the past is constantly reinterpreted through the lens of the present. It's like Robert Rauschenberg meets ancient history, but with a Japanese twist. It is art that embraces its own contradictions.
