Editor: So, this is Edvard Munch's "Summer Night. The Voice," which I see is currently held at the Harvard Art Museums. It's… ethereal, almost ghostly. What do you make of its quiet intensity? Curator: It hums with a Nordic melancholy, doesn't it? Notice how the vertical lines of the trees both frame and almost imprison the figure. It's a very Munchian expression of inner turmoil, wouldn't you say? Do you sense a similar unease? Editor: I do. It's like she’s listening for something, or someone. Curator: Perhaps the voice of the soul, echoing through the stillness of a Scandinavian summer night. Munch really knew how to dial up the existential dread, didn't he? Editor: He really did. I'll look at summer nights differently now. Curator: Me too. There's always more to discover beneath the surface.
