Vilhelm Lundstrom made this watercolour landscape of Southern France on paper, but there's no date recorded. It's all about the touch here, the way he's letting the colours flow and mingle. You can almost feel the wateriness of the paint, and see him thinking through the medium. The texture is light and airy, kind of like a dream. It's as if he's capturing a fleeting moment, a memory of the place. Look at the way the blues and greens blend together in the foliage, so simple but it really captures the feel of a hot, sunny day. I particularly like the little blocks of colour of the houses, there's something kind of clumsy and awkward about them, but they hold the whole piece together. Lundstrom had a long engagement with cubism, and you can see that in this work, which reminds me a bit of Cezanne. He’s just as interested in looking at the world in a new way. It’s more of a feeling than a clear picture, and that's why it's so good.
