These are two photographs of Isabel Wachenheimer on the street with her father, Eugen, taken by a member of the Wachenheimer family. Look at the way the light falls—a kind of even, overall glow. This gives the images a feeling of being caught between things, not quite here or there, soft like a memory. The tones are soft and grey, but there is a sharpness to the images that anchors them. I think photography is interesting because, at its core, it's all about looking, about how we choose to frame the world. Here, the family member has really captured something special, the images feel alive and intimate. Like you are really there on the street with them. And the little girl is waving, it is a snapshot of a family moment. These images remind me a little of the work of Lisette Model—a quiet observation, and a celebration of the accidental beauty that surrounds us. The truth is, art is always a conversation. It’s about seeing what others have done, taking it in, and then adding your own voice to the mix.
