This is Mathieu Lauweriks' sketch of a vase, made with graphite on paper. Look at those soft, squiggly lines. You can almost feel the artist’s hand moving across the page, feeling its way through the form. I wonder what Lauweriks was thinking about when he made this? Was he just doodling, letting his imagination wander? Or was he seriously considering the shape and design of the vase, its texture and character? There’s a sense of playfulness, but also a sense of the classical, like he was thinking about how it would sit in a room, holding flowers, casting shadows. It reminds me of the work of other architects and designers who use drawing as a way to work through ideas, such as Carlo Scarpa, who used drawing to experiment with materials and forms. Ultimately, what I love about this drawing is how it invites us to imagine possibilities and appreciate the subtle beauty of everyday objects.
