Mathieu Lauweriks made this ring design with pencil on paper, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. The beauty of a sketch lies in its immediacy. It’s a moment of pure thought captured, a direct link between the artist's hand and mind, without the fuss of colour. Here, Lauweriks plays with form and function. Look at the larger ring – the hatching and cross-hatching gives it real depth, doesn’t it? The radiating lines inside could be structural, or purely decorative. It's as if the ring contains its own little world. It makes me think about the possibilities in art, how a simple drawing can spark so many questions, and how art is like a conversation between artists across time. Are these rings? Are they portals? The beauty lies in the ambiguity, in what is not said.
