Editor: This is an Untitled mixed-media collage by György Kepes. It’s striking, almost lunar, with these contrasting shapes floating in stark monochrome. I find myself wondering about its story. What catches your eye, and how would you interpret this work? Curator: Oh, it’s absolutely bewitching, isn't it? It's like peering into another dimension. I see this push and pull between the geometric – that perfect, almost ethereal circle – and the organic, that blob-like form below, like a dark primordial soup. The negative space, that engulfing black, makes everything hum with a peculiar energy, wouldn't you say? It's less about seeing things and more about *feeling* a cosmic balance, or perhaps a looming imbalance? What do you make of those contrasting forms, floating yet grounded? Editor: I guess the contrast does give it a strange tension. I hadn't considered the "cosmic balance" idea... I was more focused on the composition, but now it's like those shapes are planets in orbit! Curator: Exactly! And the artist’s hand is so visible, too, you know? It is almost painterly... which makes me ponder on process... accident, maybe, combined with careful intention. Does it give you the impression it happened spontaneously, or over long consideration? Editor: Hmmm... Maybe a bit of both? The shapes feel planned but the textures feel very organic. It feels like Kepes was creating his own little universe there. I see the abstract expressionism tag now. Curator: Well said. Perhaps all art is creating a new universe. After seeing that, I know I won't forget to notice the universe in this artist's process. Editor: That's definitely given me a lot to think about!
