This photograph album contains six small, square black-and-white photographs. I wonder about the artist of these photographs. What did they want to capture? The mountains, beach, and towns all suggest a longing for place. You know, the material reality of painting or photography is really important. A painting changes as the light in the room changes. The same thing must be true here; the qualities of the photographic paper are really important, and the way the images are placed next to one another. I'm really responding to the landscape photograph here. Imagine the artist, composing the scene. The shapes and tonal shifts in the hills offer a kind of harmony. It reminds me of the landscapes by Cezanne. The history of painting is really the history of humans responding to other humans and paintings, inspiring each other. It's an ongoing conversation across time, right? Each artist brings their own perspective and contributes to the wider body of work. Like a good gossip!
