Curator: This is Pablo Bronstein's "Erecting of the Paternoster Square Column," part of the Tate Collections. Editor: It gives the impression of a relic, doesn’t it? The scaffolding and the classical monument together suggest layers of history and ambition. Curator: Absolutely. The composition reveals the linear precision, with delicate lines creating a skeletal framework alongside the solid, imposing column. Note the subtle gradations of tone. Editor: The column, topped with what seems to be a flaming torch or a burst of leaves, strikes me as a symbol of civic pride or perhaps even imperial reach. The diminutive figures scattered around amplify that sense of monumentality. Curator: Yes, the figures ground the drawing, providing a sense of scale. The relationship between the column and the scaffolding creates a dynamic tension, a visual puzzle inviting us to decode the artist's intent. Editor: Ultimately, it’s about the persistence of symbols, isn’t it? How we continue to build and rebuild, layer meaning upon meaning. Curator: Indeed, a fascinating study in form and historical aspiration.

This work is part of a series in which Brontstein took the development of Paternoster Square in the City of London as a starting point to explore the politics and effects of reconstruction. The drawing, housed in an original 1650s frame, alludes to a grandiose historic event when actually it is a reference to a project that was completed in 2003. Gallery label, February 2010
