Corneille made "La sarabande de l'eté" with oil paint and a wild imagination, sometime during his career. I find his commitment to bold color and simplified forms so refreshing. There's a real sense of play. Look at how he layers shapes and colors. The texture, though smooth, hints at a kind of energetic application. He wasn't trying to hide the process; it's right there on the surface. That big oval form filled with red dots and surrounded by a purplish-brown outline has the power to pull me in. The colours feel rich and warm, don't they? Corneille reminds me a little of Joan Miró, in that he also used simplified forms in a playful way. But it's his own unique flavor that I enjoy. It's a celebration of summer that feels immediate and timeless.
