Otto Scholderer made this pencil drawing, “Two children fetching eggs,” at an unknown date. During the mid-19th century, when Scholderer was working, there was a growing art movement which valued depicting everyday life of the rural population. This drawing captures a seemingly simple scene, yet speaks volumes about labor and gender roles within that era. The boy climbs the ladder, actively retrieving eggs, while the girl waits below, holding a plate, ready to receive them. Although both are involved, their roles are distinct and gendered.
