Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof created this series of line and loop patterns with pencil on paper, and you can almost hear the scratch of the graphite against the page. It is a symphony of observation and invention. I can imagine Dijsselhof in his studio, surrounded by objects, driven by a desire to understand how things connect. This piece feels like a sketchbook, a space for exploring ideas, where doodles become doorways to deeper understanding. There’s an improvisational energy here, a dance between the hand, the eye, and the mind. The patterns suggest an interest in ornamentation, like motifs for a larger design. It is interesting to consider how these sketches relate to the work of other pattern makers like Hilma af Klint. Both artists demonstrate how the simple act of mark-making becomes a philosophical journey, echoing and amplifying one another's creative process.
