Jean Degottex made "Les alliances de juillet" with ink, embracing the action of mark-making as a record of the present moment. Look at the splatters, the runs, and that inky black against the stark white ground. There’s a real physicality here, right? It's like the paint is dancing, or maybe even fighting, with the surface. The ink seems almost alive, dripping and pooling with a mind of its own. And then there's this gorgeous contrast between the density of the central form and the scattering of smaller marks around it. It’s dynamic, a kind of controlled chaos. I'm reminded of Franz Kline, another artist who wasn't afraid to let the energy of his gestures take center stage, but Degottex brings an even more calligraphic quality to it. In the end, it's all about embracing the ambiguity and letting the process lead the way.
