Gian Maria Tosatti made this photograph, titled "I’ve already been here. Headache," but when, I don't know. Here, the light oozes in, thick and melancholic. Looking at the image, my eye drifts toward that one chair, the only spot of color amidst all the muted tones. There’s something about the loneliness of that single chair, and that old TV flickering with an image of the sea, that gives me the feeling that this scene is stuck in time. The flat light and drab, industrial aesthetic remind me a bit of Andreas Gursky, but with a dose of something more intimate and forlorn. The whole scene has a kind of slow burn quality; the kind of thing that settles in your mind. Like all good art, this piece doesn’t offer answers; it simply invites you to pause and consider the quiet moments in the history of a space, the kind of places where ghosts of past lives might linger.
