Thomas Gainsborough created this drawing, Landscape with Buildings by a Stream, with graphite and red chalk. The monochromatic scene is composed of a clearing in the centre, and a building in the middle distance, all framed by trees. The red chalk in the foreground draws our eyes to the lower part of the scene, before leading us into the landscape. Gainsborough's approach to drawing involves building up layers of marks and hatching that suggest rather than define the forms of the trees, buildings, and landscape. The composition lacks traditional linear perspective, creating a sense of depth through the arrangement of shapes. The textures and tones produce an atmospheric quality, almost as if we are viewing a memory or dream. In its time, such drawings were valued for their capacity to evoke feeling and imagination. The lack of precise detail invites viewers to participate actively in completing the image, and to bring their own emotional experiences. This work offers a space for contemplation on the relationship between nature, representation, and human perception.
