This photograph, made by an anonymous photographer, shows Professor Dörpfeld and officers in a sloop of the S.M.S. Loreley at Lefkás. It’s all in tones of brown like an old memory, a haze that softens the edges of things. I love the way the photographer has used the water, and the way the reflections are captured. It’s almost like the whole scene is mirrored, doubling the world. There is a stillness in the water, broken only by the ripples around the boat, which creates a sense of depth and movement. The photograph gives the impression of a transient moment, like a glimpse into another time. It makes me think of the way Gerhard Richter uses photographs as a source for his paintings, abstracting them into something new. In the end, art is just a conversation across time, a way of seeing and experiencing the world that we pass on to each other. There's no right or wrong way to look, just different perspectives, each as valid as the next.
